Frequently Asked Questions
What is gematria?
Gematria is the ancient practice of assigning a number to each letter and adding them up to find the numerical value of a word or phrase. It originated with Hebrew and Greek texts and later spread to English numerology systems.
What is the difference between Simple, Pythagorean and Chaldean?
Simple counts A=1 through Z=26. Pythagorean reduces letters to a 1–9 digital-root cycle (A=1, B=2 … I=9, J=1, K=2 …). Chaldean uses an older 1–8 assignment based on sound vibrations, where some letters share values and 9 is considered sacred and skipped.
Why are numbers and punctuation ignored?
Gematria is a letter-based system, so only A–Z (case-insensitive) contribute to the totals. Spaces, digits and punctuation are skipped rather than scored.
Is gematria the same as numerology?
They overlap but are not identical. Gematria focuses on the value of words and phrases, while numerology more broadly studies numbers in names, dates and life events. This tool covers the word-value side.
